Community Development Projects

We believe that lasting change begins at the community level. Our development projects focus on improving living conditions, fostering unity, and empowering residents to take charge of their futures. From housing advocacy to political education and community clean-ups, we are committed to creating healthier, safer, and more connected communities in Bhambayi.

Water & Sanitation

Access to clean water and proper sanitation is essential for community health and dignity. We lead initiatives to clear waste and dirt build-up from drains under bridges, preventing flooding and improving living conditions. In addition, GOLDCO organises community clean-up projects to address illegal dumping, transforming neglected dumping sites into thriving vegetable gardens. These projects not only beautify the area but also provide fresh produce and promote food security for vulnerable households. Through these efforts, we foster healthier, safer environments for all.

Housing

Safe and stable housing is a fundamental right, yet many residents in informal settlements face persistent housing insecurity. GOLDCO works alongside the community to advocate for access to RDP Housing, ensuring that vulnerable families are prioritised. The organisation plays a vital role in compiling and submitting lists of residents in need of housing, with many now successfully placed in safe and permanent homes.

Know Your Neighbour Initiative

Strong communities are built on connection and solidarity. Our Know-Your-Neighbour Campaign encourages residents to foster meaningful relationships with those around them, promoting unity and collective responsibility. Through communal events, neighbourhood meetings, and shared projects, we created spaces where people can engage, collaborate and support one another. This initiative strengthens community ties, reduces isolation, and nurtures a spirit of mutual care that uplifts the entire settlement.

Disability Advocacy

GOLDCO is committed to promoting inclusion and accessibility for all community members, including those living with disabilities. One of GOLDCO’s key initiatives is supporting the Movement of the Active Disabled (MAD)—a group made up of individuals with disabilities and their families. MAD provides a platform for community members to meet regularly, share experiences, and collaborate on ways to improve accessibility and inclusion in Bhambayi. Through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and engagement with local authorities, GOLDCO ensures that the voices of people with disabilities are heard and their needs addressed, fostering a community where everyone can participate fully and equally.

Political Education

GOLDCO believes that informed communities are empowered communities. Through partnerships with political and educational organizations, GOLDCO facilitates workshops and dialogues aimed at educating the residents of Bhambayi on how local government operates and the principles of the South African Constitution. These sessions provide valuable insights into democratic processes, rights, and responsibilities, equipping community members with the knowledge needed to engage with local authorities and advocate for their needs. By building capacity and raising awareness, GOLDCO helps foster active citizenship and stronger, more participatory governance at the grassroots level.
